Basic Information on Fiberglass Boat Building Supplies

from:

Many of the modern boat designs are made from fiberglass. It is one of the most popular materials used for boat building supplies today. However, fiberglass has been used to help reinforce wood boats for many years so it really is not something new to the market.

Are you interested in building or repairing a fiberglass boat? Then you may be wondering what fiberglass boat building supplies are available to help you out in this department. There are different materials and tools that can make your job easier depending on what you are trying to accomplish. Before you begin to work with fiberglass supplies it is important to understand a little about this type of material.

Understanding Fiberglass

Understanding as much about fiberglass as you can will help you work with this type of material a little easier. First of all fiberglass is very resistant to the weather. It is some of the strongest material used in boat building and works well when used over other materials to reinforce them and make them stronger. Fiberglass does not expand or contract and it is a fairly lightweight material.

Fiberglass is sometimes called “spun glass” and “glassfibre” because it actually consists of tiny fine pieces of glass fibers. These fibers are pressed together and used as a reinforcing agent. Many people develop a rash when working with fiberglass so it is important to wear protective clothing. These tiny pieces of glass tend to work their way through your skin if it is not protected.

Types of Fiberglass Boat Building Supplies

There are different types of fiberglass boat building supplies that will be needed for you to either build a boat or repair one. Of course, what you need will depend on the job at hand. Here is a list of some of the basic materials that are included in fiberglass boat building supplies.

• Fiberglass cloth
• Fiberglass tape
• Epoxy resins
• E-glass biaxial cloth
• Fiberglass matting

When building a fiberglass boat a mold is used to help shape the design. Therefore, if you are planning to design and build your own boat then a mold will also be included in the list of fiberglass boat building supplies.

Using fiberglass for building and repairing boats is one of the most favorable materials used by many people because not only is it strong and weather resistant, but it is also an inexpensive material to work with. This is great for people that have a tight budget to work with or for anyone that just likes to get the most for their money.
